Week in Review 01/16/10

This week reading Machiavelli's The Prince and Magician: Apprentice by Raymond E. Feist.  Left them at my sister's earlier so I won't be able to finish either until tomorrow or possibly early next week.  Read and rated Wake and Letters to Jenny.  Reviews posted.  Slowly working through my books.

Speaking of books, went to the Chandler Library Book Sale yesterday.  Purchased 4 hardcovers and 11 paperbacks for $17.50.  There were more titles, but they were in pretty bad condition.  I don't remember having that problem in Westland.  I used to walk away with 20 books on a bad day, and still spend less than $10.00.  All of which would be in good condition.  I was going to go to Bookman's today, but that got put on hold.  My g/f was sent home sick from work so I need to watch over her.  Maybe tomorrow depending on how she's feeling.

Doing bad at work right now, not meeting my goals and barely making the company money.  Not good.  Possible chance of losing my job.  Hopefully I can get my old job back with decent hours.  Doubtful.

Nothing else going on.  Still working through Culdecept, and Shadow Hearts after that.  Busy, busy.  Later

Book Review #5 - Uncle John's Unstoppable Bathroom Reader

Uncle John's Unstoppable Bathroom Reader
Bathroom Readers' Institute

Simply put, this book is great for long trips (in the car, on a plane, to the bathroom). It is filled with stories, facts, and useless information. Fun, light read to enjoy at leisure.  I used it as bathroom reading material, it fits right on top of the toilet tank.

Book Review #4 - Wielding a Red Sword

Wielding a Red Sword
Piers Anthony

This is the 4th book in the series, but like the rest of the books it can be read on its own. I thought the book was ok, not the greatest. You know what is going to happen in the rest of the book after the first few chapters. I feel Anthony started sliding after book two, Bearing an Hourglass. As with his Xanth novels, I still feel the first was the best.

Book Review #3 - Wake

Wake
Lisa McMann

I wasn't exactly sure what to expect from this book. I picked it up at B&N in the 'local authors' section. I wasn't to thrilled with it. About half the book could have been removed and the story would have been the same. There is also a lot that wasn't explained, however I'll assume they explain more in the next book. It is a light young adult read that reminds me of Fear Street. Although I wouldn't recommend it for young teens or kids, there is several mention of nudity and hinting of sex. Overall, decent but not good enough for me to want to go out of my way to get the next book.

Book Review #2 - Letters to Jenny

Letters to Jenny
Piers Anthony

I'm not sure how to review this. Anthony never intended this to be a book. It just started out as a series of letters he wrote to a young girl hit by a drunk driver. Her mother sent him a letter requesting he write one to her daughter. Just one. At that time she was almost fully paralyzed. What the book turns into isn't a story of triumph abouth the girl, but a deeper look at the author. Not what I expected. I prefer his fiction, although I did learn a few things about him. Possibly more so than Bio of an Ogre.

Week in Review 1/10/10

Not much has happened this past week. Monday a new game came in the mail, Culdecept. Since I bought it last week before New Years I don't count it as a game purchased this year. Think of Yugioh/Magic + Monopoly. You have a hand of no more than 6 cards and you take turns moving across a board placing your creatures and leveling up the land (spaces on the board). First player to reach a designated number of points wins. You lose points if you lose a battle against another players creature or they destroy one of yours. It takes forever to play a map. Hoping to beat that and Shadow Hearts soon.

Just finished Mermaid's Madness on Friday. Gave it 4 out of 5 stars. I thought it was good, but not great. I explain in more detail in my review. Also reading Letters to Jenny and Wake. Hope to finish those soon too.

I also went to the Chandler Downtown Art Walk Wednesday. It was different. Every table had a different type of art. We saw beaded bracelets, paintings, photos, glass sculptures, and metal scrap art. What I bought is above.
Not much else new. Was sick and got sent home Thursday, stayed in bed the rest of the day. Start my new hours Monday, 130pm-10pm. There goes any chance I may have of seeing friends for a while.
Going to start reading now, then dishes. Ciao
